Performing & Visual Arts
Creative expression is a vital component for a well-rounded academic career. Students are encouraged to explore the arts and are given performance and visual art opportunities. The Fine and Performing Arts Department at NDP seeks to maximize the creative potential in each student. By providing opportunities for students to try new artistic venues in the visual and performing arts, teachers and students together express their individual creativity while collaborating and supporting each other. NDP's many arts programs ensure that students will find their niche.
NDP produces three productions per year and performs them at school and also in the great community. Recent performances include The Sound of Music and Murder's in the Heir. All students are encouraged to audition for a role or join the backstage crew or tech team. The Drama Club is one of the largest clubs on campus and is a great way for freshmen to get involved and make new friends. It is a fun class that helps students with public speaking and presentations.
The music department at NDP is jamming! Students are taught true musicianship in our extremely popular Jazz Ensemble and Guitar Orchestra. Participants learn quickly and all instrumentalists perform in our fall and spring Fine Art Festivals, competitions and special community and Diocesan events.
Choir is offered as an elective and is preferably taken both semesters. Students perform at a number of school events as well as in the greater community. Auditions are held in May for the coming year. NDP has four different choirs:
1. Chorus: Chorus aims to serve beginning or inexperienced singers. Students will learn the basics of reading music, hearing melodies and harmonies, and how to use their voice in a group setting. This group will perform a variety of music including jazz, contemporary choral, gospel, classical, and pop/Broadway music.
2. Concert Choir: Concert Choir is an intermediate group where students learn and perform a variety of choral music. Each member of this group will enhance music reading skills, improvisation skills, sight-reading, and develop ensemble skills. This group will perform a variety of music including jazz, contemporary choral, gospel, classical, and pop/Broadway music.
3. Show Choir: (Vocal Impact) Show Choir is an auditioned group- students are encouraged to take the course both semesters. Singers must be proficient sight-readers and dancers in order to audition/register for this course. This group will focus on various aspects of performance including singing, dance, and showmanship.
4. Honors Concert: (Missa Sanctorum) Honors Concert is an auditioned group. This course is a yearlong commitment. Singers must be practiced sight-readers and performers. This group will sing a variety of music spanning multiple genres and numerous historical periods. Singers of Honors Concert will work towards enhancing vocal technique as well as advanced ensemble skills.
Auditions for Vocal Impact and Honors Concert are held in May.
A dance elective is offered to students of all skill levels. Students are taught the basics and challenged to master more advanced techniques.
Students of all skill levels hone their artistic skills under the guidance of NDP's visual arts faculty. Classes are offered in ceramics, painting, drawing, photography, videography and computer graphics.
